Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to make his return to the field in 2024, according to head coach Mike McDaniel, despite ongoing concerns regarding his health.

Tagovailoa has missed the last three games due to a concussion sustained in Week 2, marking the latest in a series of head injuries that have raised questions about his long-term NFL future.

McDaniel: Tua's return is on the horizon

Speaking at a press conference following the Dolphins' bye week, McDaniel addressed the situation, expressing optimism about the quarterback's progress.

"All the word Tua has gotten has continued to be positive,"McDaniel said.

"I do expect to see him playing football in 2024, but where that is exactly, we'll let the process continue since we still have time before we could even entertain anything."

Tagovailoa is eligible to return to practice on October 23, after his stint on injured reserve ends.

However, McDaniel was noncommittal about whether the quarterback would be able to take the field next week.

"As far as timelines go, I know he's not playing this week,"McDaniel added, noting that Tagovailoa has continued to consult with medical specialists for further evaluation.

"There's still information that he's seeking this week."

This is the first time McDaniel has publicly stated that he expects Tagovailoa to play again this season, an announcement that offers some hope for Dolphins fans concerned about the quarterback's future.

There's still concern for Tagovailoa

Tagovailoa's history of concussions, including two in 2022, has been a point of contention, with many questioning whether he should consider retiring.

Despite the concerns, both McDaniel and Tagovailoa have remained focused on a return to football.

McDaniel emphasized that he never considered the possibility of Tagovailoa being unable to return.

"I never really allowed myself any sort of contemplation moments on whether he would or wouldn't," McDaniel said.

"I was so concerned with where he was at and trying to operate on a next-man-up mentality... It is exciting that I do believe he'll play football this year."

The Dolphins, who currently sit at 2-3, have struggled in Tagovailoa's absence.

The team has relied on backup quarterbacks Skyler Thompson, Tim Boyle, and Tyler Huntley during the past few games, with mixed results.

As the Dolphins prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, the timeline for Tagovailoa's return remains uncertain, though McDaniel's comments suggest fans may see their star quarterback back on the field before the end of the season.
